Sewing my Own Wardrobe

About a year ago, I rekindled a knitting practice. Previously I had knitted one chunky scarf and one stockinette cowl. They were both very simple. As I sat learning how to knit socks, I began to hunger to knit a sweater. Once I began my sweater many thoughts ran through my mind.

There is so much out there about slow living, being minimal, being sustainable, and more. I began to dive into various forms of content and I noticed those I enjoy following focus on making sustainable swaps, pantry staples, incorporating nature into home decor, but no one really talks about clothing past a capsule wardrobe. Which is great, please do not think I am criticizing. There is no wrong way to find sustainability on your path to being more sustainable. All of these thoughts swirling around led me to wanting to knit all of my knitwear.

As I continued down my thought rabbit hole, I began to entertain the idea of learning how to sew. Then I could create my own capsule wardrobe. I could source textiles from companies that share my values. I could truly vote with my dollar on what I wear.

Sew (see what I did there) with no previous knowledge or experience I have decided I want to create my own small wardrobe for 2024. I received a Singer sewing machine for the holidays this past year from my mom.

Now, the outline of my goal and the exceptions (we all deserve some exceptions). I am not so delusional as to think I can make every piece of my clothing. Mainly because I do not have a machine that could handle heavy duty sewing.

  • If I need denim or other heavy pants, then I will turn to brands that align with my shopping ethics.

  • The other exception is outwear. I live in a temperate rainforest in Southeast Alaska. I already have these items in my wardrobe at the moment, these are just in case terms.

Next step in my process is getting started! Are there any new hobbies or big goals you have set for 2024? Please share them in the comments, I would love to hear what you have going on.
